Volunteer opportunities

We serve nearly 500 people per weekday. We are in need of weekday volunteers to help with a variety of service needs.

LOTS seeks volunteers who are committed to regularly investing time with those who are homeless and formerly homeless with the goal of establishing relationships that bring long-term change. Why? We believe that consistency creates trust, and trust builds relationships, and relationships are the foundation of change.

Volunteer Details

There are a variety of volunteer roles we need to fill. Below we outline some of the roles and responsibilities. Training will be provided according to the area(s) in which you wish to serve.

Meal Team - These roles are essential in serving more than 300 homeless neighbors each weekday.

Meal Prep: Help prepare and/or package hot meals or sack lunches and snack packs for our Meal Distribution team to distribute to our neighbors.
Meal Distribution: Greet our neighbors and distribute hot meals, sack lunches, or snack packs along with bottled water.
Sunday Morning Cook, Serve, and Worship Teams: In conjunction with Trinity Church, across the street from LOTS, we have a worship service, we we cook and serve breakfast for all who attend. Volunteers cook and serve breakfast, and they assist with worship.

Front Desk, Mail, Prayer and More - These roles are essential to our ability to serve more than 300 homeless neighbors each weekday.

Front Desk: Answer phones, provide referrals to area agencies as needed, greet our neighbors, and general help with basic office tasks.
Mail Distribution: Retrieve mail from filing system and distribute to our neighbors.
Clean Team: Help LOTS be a good neighbor to the surrounding community! Work with other volunteers, including some who are homeless, to remove trash from the property, the streets, sidewalks, shrubs, and storm drains where trash unfortunately is too often discarded.
Prayer & Conversation: Pray directly with neighbors and/or intercede for written requests from LOTS’ neighbors, and for staff and leadership.
Extra Hands: LOTS always has need for additional hands (picking up pre-ordered supplies for example).

Clothing & Hygiene Center - These roles require specialized planning or commitments.

Clothing & Hygiene Team: Sort, size, and distribute requested clothing based on size and other preferences as we are able to fulfill, and distribute hygiene items or kits.
- Note: Currently our Clothing & Hygiene Center is open Wednesdays and Thursdays, and as soon as the team expands sufficiently in number with experienced leadership available, we plan to open other weekdays.

What You Will Need:

Bring a willing heart and an open mind.
Leave any prejudice, assumptions, and judgement at home.
Commit to honor the absolute confidentiality of all client information.
Discipline to not give rides or money to clients...even when your heart tugs on you to do so.
All volunteers at our Fannin Street facility must be 18 years or older.
